What is Favipiravir ???

                                         

                                            Favipiravir is an antiviral medication  used to treat INFLUENZA(flu like symptoms , fever cold, sore throat) in Japan. It is being manufactured by TOYAMA CHEMICAL and was approved for medicinal use in Japan in 2014. 

Mode of Action: 

                                            The mechanism is thought to be related to selective inhibition of viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase .Favipiravir is a prodrug , that is metabolized into active drug, favipiravir-ribofuranosyl-5'-triphosphate Favipiravir-RTP

FAVIPIRAVIR as COVID 19 Treatment:

                                            Recently Favipiravir approved as anti - covid 19 drug , DGCI ( Drug Controller General of India) approves Influenza treatment drug for covid 19 in India.

Behind this reason:

                            The DCGI has approved the use of this drug an antiviral agent commonly used for treating influenza and now is used to  treat mild to moderate cases of COVID 19 in INDIA. The drug regulator has also granted the LICENCE to manufacture  and export this drug to Biophore India Pharmaceuticals, a HYDERABAD based medicine and medical device manufacturing organization. 

                                          Apart from treating Favipiravir ti Influenza and COVID 19 , Favipiravir has also been investigated for life threatening parhogens, contains the Ebola and Lassa viruses.

                            Recently the GLENMARK won an approval from DCGI to manufacture of Favipiravir  for the treatment of COVID 19  under the brand name of FabiFlu. It is the first oral Favipiravir based approved medication in the country against COVID 19.

                               Apart from Favipiravir, onother popular antiviral drug that has been approved for the treatment for COVID 19 patients is REMDESIVIR. Remdesivir is a broad spectrum antiviral medication developed by Biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences. Remdesivir is an EBOLA drug that could be a potential treatment for COVID 19. The U. S. FDA reviewed the Investigational New Drug (IND) application filed by the company for remdesivir to treat COVID 19 and granted investigational new drug authorization to study the drug in February 2020.

Gilead is working with government and non government  organization and local regulatory agencies for providing Remdesivir for compassionate use in patients with COVID 19.

                                    It is a 1-cyano substituted adenosine nucleotide analogue with broad spectrum antiviral activity against various RNA viruses. The compound undergoes a metabolic mechanism, activating nucleoside triphosphate metabolite for inhibitting viral RNA Polymerase
